Fauvism
Definition: A twentieth century painting style emphasizing brilliant, often unnatural, colors and the forms created by this.
History of Fauvism(1898-1908)
  • First art movement in early years of twentieth century
  • Flourished in France
  • Rejected traditional painting and sculpture ideals
  • The first Fauvist exhibition occurred in 1905.
  • Profound influence on the development of the Expressionists.
  • Fauvism died out after 1908
Characteristics
  • explosive colors and impulsive brushwork,
  • short strokes of pure color
  • color/art generates energy
  • stark juxtapositions of complementary hues
  • created controversy and deliberate disharmonies
